Commuting Tips

Benefits of Biking

Making everyday trips – to work, school, shopping or appointments – by bike can be a pleasant, low-cost alternative to driving alone. It’s also a great way to add more physical activity to your day without having to make time to visit the gym.

Use the information on this site to help you get started with bike commuting in the central Shenandoah Valley. You can find out where to connect with regional transit to bridge the gap for longer trips, or give us feedback on bike lanes, trails and racks in your community.

Bikes on Buses

All buses operating in Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County are equipped with bike racks that can accommodate 3 (three) bikes at a time.

Get Going

  • Safety Tips:

    • Be predictable.
    • Ride with traffic, not against it.
    • Follow all signs and signals.
    • Signal for lane changes and turns.
    • Be visible.
    • Use front and back lights.
    • Wear light-colored or reflective gear.
    • Stay out of the “door zone” – be far enough away from parked cars to avoid being hit by a sudden door opening.
    • Try not to pass on the right, especially when there isn’t much room.
    • Look over your shoulder before leaving the bike lane to turn left or when passing another cyclist.
    • Use your manners.
    • Give pedestrians lots of space.
    • Warn pedestrians if you will be passing them from behind.
    • Obey all traffic rules.
    • If you are forced to “take the lane” to safely navigate a narrow road, make sure you move over as soon as possible to let drivers stuck behind you pass.
    • Apologize if you make an error.
    • Give a wave of thanks to someone who does something nice for you.
